How to Embed a Google Doc in Notion

To embed a Google Doc in Notion, set the document's sharing to "Anyone with the link" (Viewer), copy the URL from the address bar, paste it onto a Notion page, and choose "Create embed". The live document renders inside Notion — always current, with no copy-paste drift between tools. If teammates see a sign-in prompt instead of the doc, the sharing setting is the culprit.

Why embed Google Docs in Notion?

  • Reference a living spec or brief inside the Notion project that uses it.
  • Avoid maintaining two copies of the same document in two tools.
  • Give a Notion dashboard one source of truth for long-form writing.

How to embed Google Docs in Notion

  1. Set the doc's sharing

In Google Docs, click Share and change access to "Anyone with the link" with the Viewer role. Without this, viewers of your Notion page see a Google sign-in screen instead of the document.

  2. Copy the document URL

Copy the full URL from the browser's address bar (it looks like docs.google.com/document/d/…/edit). You don't need File → Share → Publish to web for a basic embed.

  3. Paste into Notion and create the embed

Paste the link on your Notion page and choose "Create embed". The doc renders inline. Drag the embed tall — documents read best at 500 px or more of height.

  4. Optional: embed a cleaner read-only view

Replace /edit at the end of the URL with /preview before pasting. The embed then hides Google's toolbar and menus, showing just the document content.

Good to know

  • Viewers can read but not comfortably edit through the embed — for editing, open the doc in a new tab via the embed's menu.
  • Docs restricted to specific people show a sign-in prompt inside Notion for everyone else.
  • Very long documents scroll inside the embed frame rather than expanding the Notion page.
  • The embed reflects the live doc — there's no way to pin a snapshot version.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my embedded Google Doc show a sign-in screen?

The document's sharing is restricted. Set it to "Anyone with the link" (Viewer) in Google Docs' Share dialog and reload the Notion page.

Can people edit the Google Doc from inside Notion?

Technically yes if you grant Editor access, but the embedded editing experience is cramped. Most teams embed as Viewer and use the pop-out to edit in a full tab.

Does the embed update when the doc changes?

Yes — it's the live document. Reloading the Notion page shows the current version; there is no stale copy to maintain.

Can I embed just a section of a Google Doc?

No, the embed shows the whole document from the top. If you need one section, link to a bookmark in the doc or split the content into a smaller doc.

How is this different from embedding Google Sheets or Slides?

Same paste-and-embed pattern, different content type. See our separate guides for embedding Google Sheets and Google Slides in Notion.
